How To Declutter Rugs & Floor Mats

Today's mission is to declutter rugs, and similar floor coverings, such as floor mats, throughout your home that you don't want or need anymore.

For this quick Declutter 365 mission I'd like for you to go through each room of your home looking for rugs you no longer want to keep.

Some of the rooms to definitely look through include:
Obviously, as always, I'm not suggesting you get rid of all rugs, but instead today focus on getting rid of those that are not in good condition, that you are always tripping over, or that you don't like or don't match your decor.

We often forget the stuff underneath our feet when decluttering, so that's why I've included this mission within the Declutter 365 calendar.

Once you've identified the rugs you will keep, make sure to check out the tips below to keep those floor mats and rugs safer for everyone in your family.

Make Sure All Your Rugs Have No Slip Mats Underneath Them

Make sure you keep your family and guests safety in mind and add no slip mats underneath all your rugs to lessen the possibility of the rugs sliding or pulling up, and becoming a tripping hazard {featured on Home Storage Solutions 101}Non Slip Rug Pads

As I mentioned above, the assignment for the day is not to get rid of every single rug you own in your home, so it stands to reason at the end you'll still have some rugs left that you plan to continue to use.

For those rugs, make sure today that you also properly secure them to the floor, such as by adding no slip mats under them.

This is especially important if they seem to slide or pull up and cause a tripping hazard. Safety is important!

Declutter 365 missions: 15 minute missions for your entire home

Once you declutter one type of item in your home I bet you'll want to declutter some more. After all, decluttering gives you a great reward for even a small investment of time and energy.

The Declutter 365 system is designed to help you declutter, over the course of a year, your entire house, with just 15 minutes of decluttering each day!

Hundreds of thousands of people use this proven system to get rid of their clutter, and bring peace and calm back to their homes.

Declutter 365 works to guide you to clear the clutter without overwhelm, focusing on just one small area at a time, and without making a huge mess in the process, so you see consistent forward progress without all that "messy middle" that makes it even harder to function in your home than before you started.

In addition to building a daily decluttering habit, the Declutter 365 program, along with the accompanying 52 Week Organized Home Challenge, teaches you the skills, habits, routines, and mindsets necessary to maintain the clutter free and organized state of your home from now on, so it'll never be as messy and cluttered as it is right now, ever again.

If you haven't already, make sure to get your copy of this year's Declutter 365 annual calendar here (it's FREE!), find today's date, and do 15 minutes of decluttering on the day's mission. Then, repeat again tomorrow, and again and again. Over the course of the next year, if you do this 15 minutes per day, you'll declutter your whole house!

Garden Path - idea for old runners
by: Linda

We have too many runners, so I put a couple in my garden between the raised beds to keep the weeds down. It would also work on paths between rows, and keep the soil from becoming compacted.

A costly mistake
by: Suzanne

Before seeing the 'Declutter your rugs' date, I had been 'fighting' for what seemed forever and a day to sort out my very large 3 x 4 meters shag pile rug. Nothing I did brought it back to anywhere near to how it was when I first had it, plus it didn't help that overnight our little puss would play with the ends, so everyday we had a pile of threads to collect up.

Finally, I got down on my hands and knees to untangle some of the threads. Oh my goodness, I almost fainted from the rank smell coming up from the pile. Sweaty feet smell didn't come close...and I don't have a strong sense of smell either due to sinus problems!

The next day my husband and I were up and out searching for a rug that we could cope with and the semi-old rug was out of the door.

We now have a flat weave type, that didn't cost the earth, and will be easy to keep clean.

Job satisfaction complete.

How to Store Area Rugs
by: Sue F.

We have several area rugs that we like to switch out for different seasons. Any good ideas on how to store them. They are awkward to carry to the basement. We have several that are 8' x 10'.
