Don't let those old cards sit around and become clutter. Find out where to donate used Christmas cards and greeting cards to worthwhile charities or other places in your community.
At the end of each holiday or birthday season you are left with a big stack of well wishes from friends and family who've thoughtfully sent you and your family cards.
While a few of these may be worth saving for their sentimentality the majority of them are really just going to become clutter in your home over time.
However, it is often difficult to part with these fancy pieces of paper because they're often quite beautiful, not to mention the guilt associated with getting rid of well-wishes from people.
As I discussed in more detail in my article about what to do with old Christmas cards you really have three choices: (1) declutter them (which could include throwing them in the recycling bin, not the trash); (2) upcycle or make paper crafts with them; or (3) donate them.
I was personally surprised to find out there was a charity that accepted these used holiday cards, so once I found out I definitely wanted to pass along this information.
Please note that these places will accept donations of more than just Christmas cards. They all would like and appreciate get well, birthday, thank you, and other similar cards as well. I just know most of us accumulate the majority of our cards at the end of the Christmas holidays.
St. Jude's Ranch for Children is a charity which cares for abused, abandoned and neglected children.
They've got a recyled card program which they describe as follows:
Our Recycled Card Program, an entrepreneurial teen-run job training program, teaches teens critical employment skills so they are prepared to be productive, wage-earning citizens in the community when they leave us.
Basically, they take your used cards and make new ones out of them which they then sell. You can learn more about the program here.
Only the front of the card is used, so any donated cards must not have writing on the back of that donated front picture.
You can mail your cards here:

100 St. Jude's Street
Boulder City, NV 89005
They don't accept Hallmark, Disney or American Greeting Cards.
Beside St. Jude's Children's Ranch, you can also donate these cards to other places in your community.
The best idea I've gotten from a reader is to give them to daycare centers or elementary schools. The kids can use them for crafts and practicing their cutting and scissor skills.
If you know of other places to share these used cards please tell me in the comments. You can also share what you do with used cards here, and I'll add your ideas to the site.
