PearBudget is a really simple online budget software system, using the principle of the envelope system, to help you budget for the future and track where your money really went during the month.
You can sign up for a 30 day free trial to check it out and see how it works for yourself!
One of the most important things when it comes to organizing things is keeping them simple. PearBudget is a tool aimed at keeping your personal finances as simple as possible, so you can focus on everything else needing attention.
PearBudget gave me a free annual subscription to try out. I have to say, I've found the simplicity wonderful since there are just three main things this online budget software program helps you do -- 1) plan your budget, 2) enter your receipts, and 3) review your spending.
I also like the fact that it helps you plan for irregular expenses, not just regular ones. For example, the instructions state:
You'll set aside a little bit of money each month for every irregular category, and then you'll tap into that reserve at different points during the year.
That way the bill that doesn't come but once a year, but is anticipated, doesn't throw you for a loop, but instead there is already money socked away specifically to pay it!
PearBudget was created by a husband and wife (Charlie and Sarah) who couldn't find a budgeting tool that "just worked." Everything they could find was too complicated - it was like you needed to be an accountant to even figure it out. So they made one.
PearBudget makes it really easy to get started - you don't even need to enter your e-mail address to get started with it.
If you've never set up a budget before, it walks you through the process, and you can customize it, adding in your own categories. After you get set up, you can enter in expenses and see how your planned spending matches up with your actual spending. And if they're way different, you can easily adjust your budget for the next month and try it again.
One neat thing about PearBudget is that it lets you add notes to all of the receipts you enter in. One PearBudget user whose house burned down was able to use her PearBudget entries much like a home inventory form, to help her file her insurance claim - and if her info had been on her home computer, it would have been lost along with everything else in the fire.
Other users use PearBudget to note what they save by couponing. It's a flexible and friendly system that can be used in lots of different ways to help you get everything in your home organized.
All of that - building a budget and then tracking your expenses for the first month - is totally free (and you don't need to enter in your credit card to try it out). If you use it and you like it, you can then sign up for a monthly subscription (and you can cancel it at any time).
PearBudget is normally $4.95 a month.
